ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
Difficulty: This hike is considered challenging due to the high altitude (approximately 5,000 meters above sea level). While the trail itself is not overly technical, the incline and lack of oxygen can make it difficult.
What to Bring:
- Comfortable hiking shoes with good ankle support
- Warm clothes (including layers) - temperatures can drop significantly at higher altitudes
- Rain gear (poncho or waterproof jacket) - unpredictable mountain weather
- Hat and sunglasses
- Sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher) - sun exposure is intense at high altitudes
- Backpack with plenty of water (at least 2 liters)
- Snacks (high-energy options like granola bars or dried fruit)
- Camera (with extra batteries)
- Cash (for buying souvenirs or using restrooms)
- Personal medication (if applicable)
Important Tips:
- Acclimatization: It is highly recommended to spend at least a few days in Cusco (approximately 3,400 meters) to allow your body to adjust to the altitude before attempting the hike.
- Physical Fitness: While you don't need to be in peak physical condition, a good level of fitness is recommended for this hike.
- Pace Yourself: Take your time during the hike and listen to your body. Don't hesitate to take breaks and enjoy the scenery.
- Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water throughout the day to avoid altitude sickness.
- Be Respectful: Leave no trace on the trail and respect the local environment.
- Respectful Clothing: Opt for modest clothing when visiting villages or religious sites along the way.
- Tipping: Tipping your guide is customary if you were satisfied with their service.
Optional Add-Ons:
- Horseback Riding: For those who find the hike challenging, horses are available for rent on certain sections of the trail.
- Walking Sticks: Renting walking sticks can provide additional support on the hike, especially for those with knee problems.
